What happens if my Medicare card is expired or invalid?

If your Medicare card is expired or invalid, you generally cannot be bulk billed for a telehealth consult until it is renewed. To renew your Medicare card, sign in to myGov, link Medicare, and request a replacement — most cards arrive in around three weeks, but a digital card is usually available the same day. While you wait, you can usually still see an Abby clinician on a private fee, and any urgent medical concern should not be delayed.

What happens if your Medicare card is expired or invalid

If your Medicare card is expired or invalid, you generally cannot be bulk billed for a telehealth consult until it is renewed. How do I know if my Medicare card has expired?

Your Medicare card has an expiry date printed on the front, usually formatted as MM/YYYY. The card expires at the end of that month. A few signs your card may not be valid for billing:

  • The expiry date has passed.
  • You have moved to a new postal address and never received the new card.
  • Your name has changed (after marriage, divorce, or a name change order) but the card has not been updated.
  • The reference number next to your name on the card no longer matches.
  • You are listed on a family card and have turned 15, when individual cards usually issue.

If you are not sure, you can check the digital card in your Medicare online account on myGov or the Express Plus Medicare mobile app — that view always reflects your current eligibility.

What happens at the consult if my Medicare card is invalid?

The Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) requires a valid card to claim a Medicare-funded telehealth item. The MBS Online schedule sets the rules our clinicians have to follow. In practice, here is what happens at an Abby appointment if your card has expired:

  • The clinician will still meet you and provide care. They do not turn anyone away over admin.
  • Bulk billing through Medicare cannot be processed until you have a valid card number.
  • If you would like to proceed, the consult can be charged as a private fee. The fee will be shown clearly before you accept.
  • Once your renewed card is on file, future consults can be bulk billed again where you are eligible.

Importantly, if your concern is urgent or your symptoms are severe or worsening, please do not delay. Call 000 or attend the nearest emergency department — billing details can be sorted afterwards.

How do I renew my Medicare card online?

The fastest path is through myGov.

  1. Sign in to your myGov account at servicesaustralia.gov.au/medicare. Create one if you do not have it yet.
  2. Link Medicare to your myGov account if it is not already linked.
  3. Choose Replace my Medicare card or Renew Medicare card.
  4. Confirm your address and name.
  5. Submit.

You will usually see your digital Medicare card available straight away inside the Medicare online account or the Express Plus Medicare app. The physical card typically arrives within around three weeks, although timing varies. The digital card is fully valid for telehealth claims and is what we will ask you to enter into your Abby profile.

If you cannot use myGov for any reason, you can call Medicare on 132 011 or visit a Services Australia service centre. Take photo ID with you.

Can Abby still bulk bill while I wait for my new card?

Yes, in most cases — provided the digital card is available in your myGov account. Once you can see a card number and reference number on screen, you can enter them into your Abby account details, and your consult can be bulk billed under the standard rules. If the digital card is not yet active — for example, if you have just submitted the request and your account has not updated — bulk billing is not available until it is. The waiting period is usually short.

What if I need to see a clinician right now?

You have a few options:

  • Private consult. If your card is being renewed and the digital version has not yet appeared, you can book an Abby appointment privately. The fee is shown before you confirm.
  • Reschedule. If the clinical concern can wait a day or two, the digital card usually arrives in less than 24 hours, and you can book bulk-billed once it does.
  • Reciprocal cover. If you are a visitor from a country with a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (e.g. UK, NZ, Ireland, Sweden), you may be eligible for a Reciprocal Health Care card. Confirm with Services Australia.

How do I update the new card on my Abby profile?

Once the new card is active:

  1. Open the Abby Health app and tap Profile.
  2. Choose Account details > Medicare.
  3. Enter the new card number, individual reference number (the small digit next to your name), and expiry date.
  4. Save.

From the next consult onwards, your account is back to bulk-billed status under the standard eligibility rules.
