Do I need a Medicare card to use Abby

Last Updated
May 11, 2026

A valid Medicare card is required for bulk billing at Abby. Without one, you can still book and attend consultations, but a private fee applies. Some Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA) countries entitle visitors to Medicare-equivalent access. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and Overseas Visitor Health Cover (OVHC) work differently and Abby does not currently bill these.

What a Medicare card does

Medicare is Australia's universal public health insurance. Your Medicare card unlocks rebates on a wide range of health services, including GP consultations, specialist visits (with a referral), pathology, imaging, and prescription subsidies through the PBS.

If you are an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible visa holder, you can apply for a Medicare card through Services Australia.

Who is eligible for a Medicare card

Eligibility includes:

  • Australian citizens.
  • Permanent residents.
  • New Zealand citizens living in Australia.
  • Holders of certain visas (such as protected special category visas, certain partner visas).
  • Visitors from RHCA countries (limited eligibility for medically necessary care).

If you are unsure whether you qualify, the Services Australia website has a full guide. Applying takes about ten minutes through the Services Australia portal or MyGov.

What happens if you do not have a Medicare card

Abby is currently focused on Medicare-eligible patients. If you do not have a Medicare card, see using Abby without a Medicare card for what is possible.

Reciprocal Health Care Agreement countries

Australia has Reciprocal Health Care Agreements with the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Ireland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Finland, Italy, Malta, Slovenia, and others. Visitors from these countries may be eligible for Medicare-rebated medically necessary care during their stay. Bring your enrolment evidence to the consultation.

Frequently asked questions

My Medicare card has expired. Can I still book?

Renew your card first through Services Australia (online, usually quick). Update your Abby account once the new card arrives.

Can I use my partner or family member's Medicare card?

No. Bulk billing requires your own valid Medicare details on the account that is consulting.

Do children need their own Medicare card?

Children are usually listed on a parent's Medicare card. The parent's Medicare details apply to the child's consultation.
