How Abby Health works

Last Updated
April 24, 2026

Abby Health is an online-first clinic, not a telehealth app. You book an appointment with a Specialist GP or Nurse Practitioner whose AHPRA registration is current, attend by secure video or phone, and receive prescriptions, referrals, pathology requests, medical certificates, and mental-health care plans as part of the consult. Appointments run seven days a week, all year. Abby Health bulk bills most telehealth consultations for eligible patients, meaning Medicare covers the consultation in full and there is no out-of-pocket cost for eligible patients.

What Abby Health does

Abby is a care network of clinicians connected by technology. Each Abby clinician is an independent practitioner whose AHPRA registration is current. You can book:

  • Online consultations with Specialist GPs and Nurse Practitioners
  • Prescriptions, including new scripts and repeats where clinically appropriate
  • Pathology and imaging referrals
  • Medical certificates for work, study, or carer's leave
  • Mental Health Care Plans and referrals to psychologists
  • Specialist and allied health referrals
  • Chronic disease reviews and ongoing care

To understand the clinicians you'll meet, see what makes a Specialist GP in Australia and what a Nurse Practitioner is in Australia.

How a typical appointment works

You book online at a time that suits you. Most appointments are available same-day. A few minutes before the appointment, you'll get a link to join by secure video or phone from wherever you are.

During the consultation, the clinician reviews your reason for visit, asks questions, and discusses next steps. Afterwards, prescriptions are sent electronically to your preferred pharmacy, referrals and pathology requests are sent to your email, and clinical notes are saved securely in your Abby record. If you need a medical certificate, it arrives in your account the same day.

If a different kind of care is needed — a face-to-face examination, emergency care, or a hospital visit — your Abby clinician will tell you clearly and help you take the next step.

Cost and Medicare

Abby Health bulk bills most telehealth consultations for eligible patients, meaning Medicare covers the consultation in full and there is no out-of-pocket cost for eligible patients. To be bulk billed, you need a valid Medicare card and to meet the eligibility rules for the appointment type. For detail, see is Abby bulk billed?.

Who we can help

Abby was built for Australians who find the usual path to a regular GP hard to walk. That includes patients in rural and remote communities where the nearest in-person clinic is hours away; professionals, parents, and young adults whose schedules make in-person appointments difficult; and people for whom the cost of care is part of why they delay it.

Abby is an online-first clinic — so it works well for issues that can be safely assessed without a physical examination. Your clinician will tell you clearly if what you need is better handled in person, and will help you find the right place to go.

How Abby remembers you

Abby is built for continuity of care. When you see an Abby clinician, your history — past consultations, medications, referrals, and results — is available to them through Abby's secure medical record. 71% of Abby patients rebook with the same doctor. If a different Abby clinician sees you, they pick up where the last one left off. The care network acts as one clinic.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral to see an Abby clinician?

No. You can book an Abby appointment directly — no referral is needed. Your Abby clinician can refer you on to specialists or allied health as part of the consultation when appropriate.

Do I need to install an app?

No. Abby runs in a secure web browser. You can use your phone, tablet, or laptop. You'll get a link by SMS and email a few minutes before your appointment.

What happens if I need care outside business hours?

Abby clinicians see patients seven days a week, including evenings. If your concern is a medical emergency, call triple zero (000) or attend your nearest emergency department — telehealth is not the right place for emergencies.
