Can I claim an Abby appointment on private health insurance?

Last Updated
November 25, 2025

No, you don’t need to—Abby appointments are covered under Medicare when you are eligible for bulk billing.

For privately billed appointments, Medicare does not provide a rebate for telehealth consults with Nurse Practitioners or GPs outside the bulk-billing criteria.
However, you may be able to claim your Abby invoice through your private health insurance, depending on your fund and level of extras cover.

If you’d like to try claiming, you can use the itemised invoice we provide after your appointment. Your private health insurer will be able to confirm whether your policy covers telehealth consultations.

Abby Health offers both bulk-billed and privately billed telehealth appointments. Whether you can claim anything through private health insurance depends on your policy and the type of consult.

Bulk-Billed Appointments

If you’re eligible for bulk billing:

  • Your appointment is fully covered by Medicare.
  • There is no cost to you.
  • Private health insurance cannot be used or claimed.

Receipts are not required, as there is nothing to claim.

Privately Billed Appointments

Some appointments are privately billed when Medicare bulk-billing criteria aren’t met.

Can you claim this through private health insurance?

Possibly — it depends on your insurer.
Some funds reimburse telehealth or GP/NP consults under certain extras policies.

You may use your itemised Abby invoice to check with your insurer.

What Insurance May Cover

Even if the appointment isn’t claimable, your private health policy may cover:

  • Prescription medication costs
  • Pathology or imaging not fully covered by Medicare
  • Specialist visits
  • Other related treatment

Coverage varies by fund and policy.

Unsure What’s Covered?

Check with your private health insurer using your invoice — they can confirm what is and isn’t eligible.
