Abby Health is currently focused on Medicare-eligible patients in Australia. Without a Medicare card, bulk-billed consultations are not available. We are exploring options for patients outside the Medicare system. In the meantime, if you are eligible for a Medicare card and do not have one, the Services Australia application is straightforward.

We are exploring options for patients outside the Medicare system. Why Medicare matters at Abby

Abby's bulk-billing model relies on Medicare rebates covering the consultation fee. Without a valid Medicare card, the rebate is not available, and a private fee would apply.

Who might not have a Medicare card

Common reasons people do not have a Medicare card include:

  • International students on Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
  • Working holiday or short-term visa holders.
  • Visitors from countries without a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement.
  • New arrivals to Australia waiting for Medicare enrolment to complete.
  • Australians who are eligible but have not yet applied or had their card lapse.

What to do

If you are eligible for Medicare: apply through Services Australia. Most applications are processed within a few business days. Once your card arrives, update your Abby account and book a bulk-billed consultation.

If you are from an RHCA country: you may be entitled to Medicare-rebated medically necessary care. Check Services Australia for the current list and process.

If you have OSHC or OVHC: your insurer will direct you to participating clinics. Abby does not currently bill these directly.

If you do not fit any of the above: contact us through the help centre and we will outline the current options.
