Plenty of the patients I see have never been able to describe a symptom in their own language before. I consult in English, Tamil and Sinhalese, and being able to talk about your health in the words you think in changes how much you can say, and how much I can help.
I've spent more than twenty-two years in Australian general practice, alongside qualifications earned in the UK, and I hold the FRACGP, the MRCGP (International) and the MRCP (UK). I look after patients aged one and over, through just about everything a GP sees.
The longer I do this, the more I'm convinced good care starts with being properly understood, not just properly examined.
