Transferring Prescriptions Between Pharmacies

Last Updated
April 24, 2026

If your e-script token has not yet been dispensed by a pharmacy, you can transfer it to a different pharmacy. The token remains valid until a pharmacy scans and dispenses it. If a pharmacy is out of stock, ask them to return the token — or contact your prescribing clinician for a new script. Repeats are managed separately and can each be directed to a pharmacy of your choice.

How e-scripts work in Australia

Since 2020, electronic prescriptions (e-scripts) have been the standard for most medications prescribed in Australia, replacing paper scripts for the majority of consults. When your Abby clinician issues a prescription, you receive a token — usually via SMS or email — that contains a unique QR code. You take this token to any participating pharmacy, which scans it and dispenses your medication. Pharmacies are required to participate in the national e-prescribing network under Australian Digital Health Agency standards.

Because the token exists digitally and is linked to a central prescription record, it is not permanently tied to the first pharmacy you approach. This flexibility is one of the practical advantages of e-scripts over paper.

When you can transfer an e-script token

An e-script token can be redirected to a different pharmacy as long as the original pharmacy has not yet scanned and dispensed it. Once a pharmacy processes the token, the prescription is considered dispensed and the token is no longer active. Before that point, you have full flexibility about which pharmacy fills your script.

Common reasons to transfer include: finding a better price at a different pharmacy, your usual pharmacy being out of stock, preferring home delivery, or simply being closer to a different pharmacy when you need the medication.

How to transfer your e-script to a different pharmacy

If you haven't yet approached any pharmacy — simply take your token to a different pharmacy. The token is not locked to any specific pharmacy until it is scanned and dispensed.

If a pharmacy has your token but hasn't dispensed it — ask the pharmacy to return or release the token. They can do this by resending the token to your mobile number or email. Once returned, you can present it at any other participating pharmacy.

If a pharmacy is out of stock — ask them to check when stock is expected and whether they can release your token in the meantime. Most pharmacies will release an undispensed token on request. You can then take it to a pharmacy that has stock available.

What happens to your repeats

Repeats are stored electronically in the national prescription system and are not tied to a specific pharmacy. When you fill the first dispensing of a prescription and repeats are available, those repeats can be filled at any participating pharmacy — it does not need to be the same one that filled the original. Each time you fill a repeat, you present your token (or a new token if your pharmacy resends one) and the pharmacist dispenses accordingly.

If you have ongoing medications with regular repeats, see repeat prescriptions online explained for a full overview of how the repeat system works.

Home delivery and pharmacy choice

E-scripts work with online pharmacies and home delivery services in the same way as bricks-and-mortar pharmacies. If you prefer your medication delivered rather than collected, you can send your token to a registered online pharmacy. Delivery times vary by pharmacy and location. For a guide to your options after your consult, see pharmacy pickup and home delivery.

What to do if your token has expired or been lost

E-script tokens can be resent to your mobile number or email on request. If you cannot locate your token, contact the pharmacy you originally presented it to, or reach the Abby support team through the app. If the prescription itself has expired — past the validity period set by your clinician — you will need a new consultation and a new prescription. Your Abby clinician will have your medication history on file, which makes a renewal consult straightforward. Appointments are bulk billed for eligible patients. Frequently asked questions

Can a pharmacy refuse to release my token?

A pharmacy should release an undispensed token on request. If you experience difficulty, you can contact the pharmacy's dispensing manager or seek guidance from the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia. In practice, most pharmacies release tokens without issue when asked.

Does transferring my script cost anything?

There is no charge for transferring an undispensed e-script token. The cost you pay is the dispensing cost at the pharmacy you choose, which may vary between pharmacies and depends on whether your medication is PBS-subsidised.

Can I split my script — part dispensed at one pharmacy and part at another?

No. A single dispensing of a prescription must be completed by one pharmacy. You cannot split a single dispensing across two locations. Repeats, however, can each be filled at different pharmacies if you choose.

What if my medication is not available at any nearby pharmacy?

Your pharmacy can check national stock through their dispensing system and advise on availability at other local pharmacies. An online pharmacy with home delivery is also an option for most medications. If ongoing unavailability is affecting your care, speak with your Abby clinician at your next appointment.
