Can I get painkillers, ADHD medication or sleeping pills?
Abby clinicians don't prescribe Schedule 8 opioid analgesics, stimulant ADHD medications, benzodiazepines or Z-drug hypnotics online. These are tightly controlled under Australian law and require in-person assessment, shared-care arrangements, or specialist involvement to be prescribed safely. That's not us being difficult — it's the model working the way it should. What your Abby GP can do is take your full story seriously, rule out what needs ruling out, arrange the right referrals, manage stable conditions in partnership with your specialist, and support the day-to-day of pain, sleep and focus through evidence-based, non-restricted care.

Why these medications need more than a screen
Pain, sleep and attention are some of the most personal things a doctor will ever ask about. They also sit behind some of the most carefully regulated medications in Australia — the ones with the highest potential for dependence, diversion and harm if prescribed without a full picture.
State and federal rules, along with professional prescribing guidelines, require real-time prescription monitoring, identity verification, a documented history and — for most of these medicines — an in-person examination or specialist confirmation before a prescription is written. An online-only consult can't meet that standard for a first prescription, and we won't pretend it can. The boundary exists to protect you.
What Abby clinicians can't prescribe online
- Schedule 8 opioid analgesics — the strong painkillers used for moderate-to-severe pain. First prescriptions need a hands-on assessment and, in many cases, specialist involvement.
- Stimulant ADHD medications — in most Australian states and territories these can only be initiated by a paediatrician or psychiatrist, with GPs continuing care under a shared plan.
- Benzodiazepines — used short-term for severe anxiety or alcohol withdrawal. They carry real dependence risk and are not appropriate for a first online script.
- Z-drug hypnotics — the short-acting sleeping tablets. Guidelines recommend them only for brief, specific situations, after other options have been tried.
- Testosterone replacement therapy and anabolic agents — these require baseline bloods, an in-person examination and, usually, endocrinology input before initiation.
Why this is actually the safer model
The quiet truth about these medicines is that the easier they are to get, the more harm they tend to do. Dependence builds slowly. Tolerance creeps up. The original problem — the back pain, the restless nights, the trouble focusing — often hides something else that a rushed prescription would only paper over.
Abby's job is to be the doctor who knows you, not the doctor who hands you the fastest answer. Our clinicians look at the full picture, use Abby AI as decision support to surface your history and any risk signals, and take the time to think before they prescribe. That's the model working.
What your Abby clinician can do
Plenty, as it turns out. For each of these three areas, there is a longer, better path we can walk with you.
For pain. A proper assessment of what's actually going on — musculoskeletal, neuropathic, inflammatory, referred. A treatment plan that may include non-opioid analgesia, physiotherapy, imaging where indicated, and a referral to a pain specialist or local GP for examination. If you're already under a pain specialist, we can support your ongoing, stable management in partnership with them.
For ADHD. A structured conversation about your symptoms, screening questionnaires, and — when it's the right next step — a referral to a psychiatrist or paediatrician for formal assessment. Once you have a diagnosis and a stable treatment plan, Abby clinicians can support shared care under your specialist's direction, where state rules allow.
For sleep. A real look at what's keeping you awake. Sleep hygiene, cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I, the first-line evidence-based treatment), screening for sleep apnoea and mood conditions, and referral to a sleep clinic when it's warranted. Short-term medication, where appropriate, is something to discuss in person with a regular GP.
How to find the right next step with Abby
If any of this sounds like your situation, book a consult and tell your Abby clinician what's been going on. They'll listen, take a full history, and map out a plan — referrals, investigations, non-restricted treatment, or simply a second opinion on a plan you already have. Abby is built for continuity, so the next clinician you see will pick up where the last one left off.
Abby Health bulk bills most telehealth consultations for eligible patients, meaning Medicare covers the consultation in full and there is no out-of-pocket cost for eligible patients. More on how bulk billing works at Abby.

Frequently asked questions
Can Abby renew a Schedule 8 script I already have from another doctor?
Not online. Ongoing Schedule 8 prescriptions are the responsibility of the clinician managing that treatment, and in most cases require an in-person review. Your Abby GP can help you find a local clinic to continue that care.
I've been stable on stimulant ADHD medication for years. Can Abby help?
Possibly, depending on your state's rules and your specialist's arrangements. We can't initiate or renew stimulants online, but we can support aspects of your broader care and coordinate with your psychiatrist. Book a consult and bring your current specialist's details.
What can I take for sleep in the meantime?
Your Abby clinician can talk you through non-restricted options, sleep hygiene strategies, and CBT-I resources. They can also screen for underlying causes like anxiety, depression or sleep apnoea, and refer you to a sleep clinic if needed.
Who decides what can and can't be prescribed online?
Australian state and territory health regulations, the TGA, and professional prescribing standards set the rules. Our Specialist GPs and Nurse Practitioners hold current AHPRA registration and prescribe strictly within those boundaries. See the full list of what Abby can and can't prescribe online.
