Medical certificates online in Australia: legal guide

A medical certificate issued by a registered Australian health practitioner through a telehealth appointment is legally valid in Australia. Employers are generally required under the Fair Work Act 2009 to accept a certificate from a registered medical practitioner as evidence for personal or carer's leave. A medical certificate issued by a registered Australian health practitioner through a telehealth appointment is legally valid in Australia. Employers are generally required under the Fair Work Act 2009 to accept a certificate from a registered medical practitioner as evidence for personal or carer's leave. Abby Health's Specialist GPs and Nurse Practitioners issue same-day certificates after a clinical consultation.

What a medical certificate is

A medical certificate is a written document from a registered health practitioner confirming that a patient has consulted them and, in the practitioner's professional opinion, is unfit for work, study, or another listed activity — or, conversely, is fit to return. It is a formal clinical statement. It is not a note written without an appointment, and it is not a document a patient writes themselves.

Who can legally issue a medical certificate in Australia

The Fair Work Ombudsman states that employers are generally required to accept a certificate from a "registered medical practitioner". In practice, certificates can also be issued by other registered health practitioners within their scope — Nurse Practitioners, for example — and employers commonly accept these.

At Abby Health, certificates are issued by:

Specialist GPs — doctors with Fellowship of RACGP or ACRRM, registered with AHPRA. See our guide on what makes a Specialist GP in Australia.

Nurse Practitioners — endorsed registered nurses with Master's-level clinical training, registered with AHPRA. See what a Nurse Practitioner is in Australia.

All Abby clinicians hold current AHPRA registration.

Are online medical certificates valid?

Yes. A medical certificate issued following a telehealth consultation is valid in Australia provided a registered practitioner has assessed the patient and formed a clinical opinion. The delivery method — video, phone, or in person — does not change the legal standing of the certificate.

The Fair Work Act 2009 requires evidence that would "satisfy a reasonable person" that the leave is taken for the stated reason. A certificate from an AHPRA-registered practitioner is accepted as meeting that standard in most Australian workplaces.

What Abby medical certificates include

Every Abby-issued medical certificate is a PDF with:

the practitioner's full name, AHPRA registration number, and profession;

the date the certificate was issued;

the date or date range for which the patient is certified unfit;

a statement that the patient consulted the practitioner;

a verification reference number, so employers or schools can confirm authenticity;

the Abby Health practice details.

We do not put the patient's diagnosis on the certificate unless the patient specifically requests this. Under Australian medical confidentiality norms, a medical certificate states fitness, not diagnosis. An employer or school is not entitled to a diagnosis.

What certificates Abby can issue

Work certificates. For personal leave (illness or injury) or carer's leave. See our certificates for work and school guide for specifics.

School and university certificates. For absences from classes, exams, or assessments.

Carer's certificates. Where you need leave to care for an immediate family or household member who is unwell.

Fit-for-work and return-to-duty letters. Confirming you are well enough to return, sometimes with modified duties.

Medical clearance letters. For travel, insurance, or specific activities, where appropriate.

Most certificates are issued during or immediately after the consultation and are available in your Abby account straight away.

When a certificate cannot be backdated

Medical certificates are generally issued for the day of consultation and future dates where appropriate. Backdating a certificate — issuing a certificate for a day the practitioner did not see you — is not permitted under AHPRA standards and is not something Abby clinicians will do. If you were unwell yesterday and need a certificate, book today's appointment — many employers accept certificates dated the first day you could see a doctor.

Certificates for longer absences

If your illness requires more than a short period off work, your clinician will issue a certificate for a clinically reasonable duration. For extended leave — particularly periods exceeding ten days — additional review, referral, or in-person assessment may be required. Your clinician will let you know what's needed.

How to book a certificate appointment

Book a telehealth consultation at abbyhealth.app/book. The booking flow routes certificate requests to the next available Specialist GP or Nurse Practitioner. Appointments are bulk billed for eligible patients. Typical wait time for a First Available consultation is short, though this varies with demand.

If your employer questions an online certificate

Every Abby certificate carries a verification reference. Employers can use the reference to confirm the certificate was issued by an Abby clinician. The Fair Work Ombudsman's guidance on paid sick and carer's leave covers the employer's obligations.

Frequently asked questions

Will my employer accept an online medical certificate?

Most Australian employers accept certificates from any AHPRA-registered practitioner. If your workplace has a specific policy requiring an in-person consultation, that is a workplace-level requirement, not a legal one — and you can discuss it with HR.

How long does a certificate appointment take?

Typically 5–10 minutes, depending on the reason for visit. If there are any clinical concerns that require a longer consultation, your clinician will extend the appointment.

Can I get a certificate for more than one person in one appointment?

No. Each certificate requires a consultation with the specific patient. For children or dependent family members, the patient's guardian attends the consultation with them.

Can I get a carer's certificate without my family member being seen?

Yes. A carer's certificate attests that you need to provide care. Your Abby clinician will discuss the circumstances with you and issue an appropriate certificate.

What if I need a certificate for a specific workplace form?

Some workplaces use their own forms. Your Abby clinician can often complete these in addition to the standard certificate. Mention the form in your appointment.
