Are online medical certificates legally valid in Australia?

Yes. A medical certificate issued by an AHPRA-registered clinician over telehealth is legally equivalent to one issued in person, provided the consultation meets the same clinical standard. Our clinicians are AHPRA-registered, and you can confirm any clinician on the public AHPRA register. We have a longer explainer in Medical certificates online in Australia — legal guide.

What if my clinician decides not to issue one?

A medical certificate is never automatic. Your clinician must clinically confirm what is going on before signing one. If they cannot, they will explain why and discuss alternatives — for example, a clearance letter, a referral, or a follow-up appointment if symptoms develop further. The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners sets standards that all clinicians follow.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

Most patients can book a same-day appointment, including evenings and weekends. Abby Health runs 7 days a week with 300+ clinicians on roster. Abby Health internal data, Q1 2026. If you are unwell and need a certificate today, the First Available queue is the fastest way through. The Department of Health recognises telehealth-issued certificates the same as in-person ones.
