Routine vs urgent: how the lab decides turnaround

Pathology requests in Australia are flagged as either routine or urgent. Routine bloods (full blood count, iron studies, cholesterol, thyroid, vitamin D, HbA1c) usually return within 1 to 3 working days. Urgent requests, marked by your clinician at the time of referral, are processed first and often come back in hours rather than days.

Turnaround can stretch in a few common situations. Specialist tests sent to a reference laboratory, weekend or public-holiday collections, regional collections that need transport to a metropolitan lab, and any sample that needs repeating because it clotted or arrived outside acceptable conditions all add time. If you are in a rural or remote area, the lab still processes the sample at the same speed once it arrives — the extra wait is usually transit, not testing.

How long do urine, swab and STI tests take?

Urine and swab samples often take longer than blood because microbiology labs grow bacteria from the sample to identify what is there and what it is sensitive to. As a guide:

  • Urine dipstick (in clinic): minutes
  • Urine culture (lab): 2 to 3 working days
  • STI nucleic acid tests (chlamydia, gonorrhoea): 2 to 4 working days
  • Throat or wound swabs: 2 to 4 working days
  • COVID-19 PCR: usually within 24 to 48 hours

Who calls me with the results?

Your result goes back to the clinician who requested it. How will I know my results are ready?

You will get an SMS once your clinician has reviewed the result and is ready to discuss it. For privacy reasons, raw lab values are not sent by text or email until your clinician has had a chance to review them with you — this protects you from misreading a number out of context, and it follows the privacy principles set out by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.

What if my results are taking longer than expected?

If it has been more than 5 working days since your collection and you have not heard from your clinician, message us through the app or book a brief follow-up. The most common reasons for a delay are a sample that needed repeating, a test sent to a reference lab, or a public-holiday backlog. None of these are anything to worry about, but it is reasonable to ask.

If your symptoms are worsening while you wait — for example, escalating pain, fever, breathlessness, or new neurological symptoms — do not wait for the result. If your symptoms are severe or worsening, call 000 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Australian general practice has a long-standing principle: no news is not necessarily good news. Results occasionally fall through the cracks — a sample needing repeat, a lab system delay, an SMS that didn't arrive. How long is a pathology referral valid for?

A pathology referral from a GP or Nurse Practitioner in Australia is generally valid for the period your clinician has noted on the form. For most non-pregnancy tests this is up to 12 months, although some labs and tests have shorter windows and your clinician may set a tighter timeframe if the test is part of monitoring.
