How do I book a mental health appointment?

Last Updated
August 12, 2026

Yes. You can book a 20-minute mental health appointment with an Abby Health Nurse Practitioner, seven days a week, without a referral. Your NP will talk through what has been going on, assess what support suits your situation, and arrange next steps, with regular GP review built into this care. Appointments are bulk billed for eligible patients with a valid Medicare card. Strict Bulk Billing eligibility criteria applies.

If you or someone you know is in immediate distress, please call Lifeline on 13 11 14, Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636, or 000 in an emergency. Not a substitute for emergency care. For Abby's guidance in a crisis, see if you're in crisis — immediate support.

What a 20-minute mental health appointment covers

Twenty minutes is a proper conversation rather than a rushed one. Your Nurse Practitioner will take a history, ask how you have been sleeping, coping and functioning day to day, and ask about your safety, because that is part of a careful assessment. From there you will agree on what would help most — practical strategies, coordination of a referral, or a follow-up appointment to see how you are travelling.

Common reasons patients book include anxiety, low mood, stress, sleep difficulties, grief and burnout. You do not need a diagnosis before you book, and you do not need to have worked out what to say. Turning up is enough.

Who you will see

You will see an Abby Health Nurse Practitioner — an AHPRA-endorsed clinician with specialist mental health experience. Regular GP review is built into this care, and where your needs are better met by a GP, psychologist or psychiatrist, your clinician will say so plainly and help you get there. You can rebook the same clinician for follow-up so your care stays continuous.

How to book

Book a scheduled appointment at a time that suits you and select a mental health reason for your visit, so the consultation is allocated the time it needs. Appointments are available by phone or video, whichever you prefer.

What it costs

Mental health consultations are bulk billed for eligible patients with a valid Medicare card. Strict Bulk Billing eligibility criteria applies. Where bulk billing does not apply to you, an out-of-pocket consultation fee applies and is shown to you before you confirm your booking.

If you are after a Mental Health Treatment Plan

Mental Health Treatment Plans are prepared by your regular local GP. See how to get a Mental Health Treatment Plan in Australia.

What an online appointment cannot do

Abby Health is an online-first clinic, not a crisis service, and we cannot guarantee a clinician is available in the next minute. If you are in immediate danger, call 000. If you need urgent support outside an appointment, Lifeline (13 11 14), the Suicide Call Back Service (1300 659 467) and 13YARN (13 92 76) are free and available 24 hours a day. Some presentations also need in-person or specialist care, and your clinician will tell you plainly if that is the case and point you to the right service.

Uncompromising Care. Abby Health. Care that understands you.
