This country was built on a fair go for all. We believe healthcare is no exception. It should be available to all, and uncompromising. No matter where you live or what you earn. From Bondi to Bourke, your postcode shouldn't write your prognosis.
That's the guiding philosophy Abby Health was built on.
Charlie grew up in Bourke, rural NSW, the son of a teacher. He saw first hand what distance from care really meant. Watching his dad fight cancer in a town short on GPs, every visit meant retelling his history to someone new. Worn down by the wait, fatigued by the disease and disillusioned with the care, Bruce died from an undiagnosed treatment side effect.
“No one had the full picture when it mattered most. Great healthcare is about the person treating you actually knowing you. Your history. Your fears. What's been tried and what hasn't. Care is not something we should ever have to compromise on.”
Bosco, an experienced Doctor, had watched a version of the same story unfold, but from the other side of the consulting room. Trained first in radiation oncology, then general practice, he'd sat with patients through some of the hardest news a doctor can deliver. He'd seen the frustration of inconsistent care and what it costs a patient to be understood by someone new each time. Equally he'd seen the clinician burnout. A system stretched too thin. Record keeping that hadn't changed in decades while every other industry moved forward.
When he and Charlie began talking they soon realised they were describing the same problem from opposite ends of the experience.

I wanted to use my experience to help translate that collective wisdom and information into clinical intelligence in a way that that was smart, available, accessible, user friendly, and personal"

Charlie Veitch is the Founder of Abby Health. Raised in a country town in far Western NSW, he grew up in a family of 5 boys, and a tight knit community. When his father Bruce fell ill, Charlie was barely out of his teens. He saw first hand the limitations of a stretched rural system. More often than not Bruce’s regular GP was unavailable when he needed him. Consequently those treating him, didn’t really know him. Different doctors every hospital visit, no continuity and Chemo fog meant Bruce would forget what he'd said an hour earlier. His story was fragmented and so was his care.
And that was the spark. Not a business plan, a diagnosis that healthcare in Australia doesn't fail people because the doctors don't care. It fails them because the system doesn't remember. Charlie built Abby Health to fix that, to hold every patient's story the way a GP in a small town once would have. The vision was not to create something new, but to restore something we once had - access to a GP who understands you, when you need it.

Dr Bosco Wu is Clinical Director of Abby Health and a councillor of the Australian Medical Association (NSW).
He trained as a GP after completing fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 2018, following his medical degree at ANU and early training in radiation oncology, and has practised in Canberra and Sydney since.
Alongside clinical practice, he has held teaching roles at UNSW, ANU and Macquarie University, and served as Pre-vocational Medical Education Officer at ACT Health overseeing junior doctor training and accreditation. His research on empathy in junior doctors earned the GP Synergy Charlotte Hespe Research Award, and he was named ANU Medical School Teacher of the Year, both in 2017.
